There is a lot of pressure to be the perfect parent, right from the get-go. You should have planned your baby, taken all the vitamins every day, birthed "the right way" (whatever that is!) and then had an easy time breastfeeding from birth and on.
You shouldn't hold your baby too much, you shouldn't let him cry, you shouldn't feed them too often, and you should have healthy meals to sustain yourself and your family and a clean home so that visitors can come in to say hi to the baby.
Don't let yourself go straight to Mom Jeans or yoga-pants-all-the-time, and be sure that your baby is wearing that outfit that so-and-so purchased and TAKE ALL THE PICTURES and post them to Facebook. But not too many.
And that's just the first two weeks of parenthood!!
There is no perfect parent, and there is no way you can live up to that ideal even if you tried. It is perfectly fine to be perfectly average and happy. It's not easy to do all the things the books and articles say.
Everyone is a better parent with hypothetical children and a full-night's sleep. So the next time that mom guilt comes and haunts your thoughts, remember that you are a wonderful parent.
If the idea of having a shower and a nap makes you swoon, but the reality is that your baby won't stop spitting up all over you and only sleeps when you stand up and rock her while saying "Shushhhhh" then call Ottawa Family Doula.
Our Postpartum Doulas are experts in making your normal into perfection. We tailor our services to your needs and can help you feel your best so that you can be more than perfect.
