As a doula I am often asked what it is that I do and the answer is sometimes a bit... boring. ProDoula's founder Randy Patterson defines a doula as "a trained person without an emotional attachment to the family, offering supportive services in an unbiased, nonjudgemental way." What does that mean to you though?
As a doula to your family I am a working friend. I want to help you find the answers to your questions and be a sounding board for your concerns and excitement. Often a doula knows about a pregnancy before anyone else and shares in the journey right to the birth. A doula can help a family decide what they want a baby's birth day to look like. I love my job and earn a sustainable income doing it. I'm a professional doula, you know I will be there for you because it is my job to make you my priority.
A doula is like Google, but without all the ads. A doula can be a great resource for everything that is normal. Feel crampy? Are you worried about not knowing when labour begins? Did you just cry listening to David Bowie's version of Little Drummer Boy? As a specialist in what's normal a doula can help reassure a newly pregnant woman that what is happening is, in fact, normal. If something isn't normal then a doula encourages the birthing family to speak with their care providers, and works with the care team to get back to what is normal, or how to navigate a new normal.
A doula is like a personal trainer. A doula will help you find your strength, especially in labour and will work with you and your partner. A doula is there for all births, whether that looks like a hospital birth with an epidural, or a birth centre with no pain medication, a home birth, an induction or cesarean birth. Your doula will help you learn about comfort measures to take in early labour. A doula will also help you consider what your postpartum period will look like. Just like getting married has a big day, you still have to consider what it will be like after the wedding. Bringing a baby home has lots of changes to consider and a doula will coach you into your new role so that you are confident and ready to take on parenthood.
