Drink Up

It's another heatwave this week in Ottawa and if you're carrying around a baby or belly it's extra hot! Staying hydrated is key to beating the heat. Here are a couple of my favourite drinks that can help you feel cool and even satisfy a craving for something other than water.

David's Tea has some great loose teas specifically designed to be served over ice. My favourite this year is Just Peachy and Mango Fruit Punch. Make a pitcher or an individual glass and add some honey if you like sweeter drinks.

My most refreshing drink is a watermelon slushy. Watermelon is fabulous for those suffering with morning sickness and is full of great things like vitamins A, C, B6,  lycopene, magnesium and potassium.

Ingredients:

  • One watermelon, sliced without rind
  • 1 lime
  • 1 cup of ice
  • Fresh mint (optional)

To make the slushy, start with a refrigerated melon.

Slice and blend in a food processor or blender until smooth. Pour the juice through a fine mesh colander, but don't press it through so that the juice stays smooth.

Re-blend one cup of the melon juice, half the juice of a lime and one cup of ice, and add some fresh mint in the blended drink or as garnish.

Serve cold and enjoy!

Stay cool this weekend and enjoy these summer days! Kids love the slushy too, so be prepared to share some sips.
