Family Day in the Capitol

Family Day in the Capitol

As far as statutory holidays go, Family Day is a fairly recent addition to the calendar. But when the weather is grey and dreary and you are looking at a few more months of it, a three day weekend in the middle is a nice pick-me-up.

Family Day is also a perfect opportunity to have fun, make memories, and maybe even start a new family tradition. Regardless of your age or stage, there is certain to be an activity you can find and enjoy!

1.     Women and Whiskey Masterclass

Family Day weekend doesn’t have to be about being with your family every single minute! In fact, it is so important for parents to have the time and opportunity to do things other than being a parent. For those who identify as a woman and enjoy or would like to know more about whiskey, this sounds perfect! Now, the February 8th classes are sold out, but there are still tickets left for the classes on February 15th!

2.     Frost and Fire Festival

A weekend of amazing events, with something to do for the entire family? That makes planning simple! This annual event with skating, crafts, food, and more, is certain to be a fantastic day for everyone in the whole family.  Find the schedule here

3.     Vanier Sugar Shack

One of the few active sugar shacks in an urban area, the Vanier Sugar Shack starts its sugar season in February by tapping the trees. Join them on February 15th to launch their 2020 season. Experts will be on hand to help with the tapping, and everyone can enjoy a pancake breakfast after! Then you can go back to their Sugar Festival in April!

4.     Kids Concert with the Dad Joke Duo

If you think your head might explode if you have to listen to the Wiggles one more time, this might be an event for you. A concert designed to entertain kids and their parents, this looks like such a fun way to spend an evening!

5.     Check out the Museums

Ottawa has some of the best museums in the country, and sometimes we forget how awesome they are! All of the local museums have Family Day programming, so pick your favourite museum, or one you’ve never been to, and head that way!

Museum of Nature has two special exhibits that are on throughout Family Day. The first is Microbes and the second is the Butterflies.

Museum of Science and Technology has a special Family Day event happening on February 17th.

Canadian Agriculture and Food Museum - Fruity pancakes, milking demonstrations, and so many more fun activities!

Canadian Aviation and Space Museum – lots of fun events planned including colourful chemistry experiments,  parachute games, and more.

Canadian Museum of History/Children’s Museum – while this is likely to be the busiest museum on the Family Day weekend, there are lots of fun exhibits to explore!

There is always lots to do in the Capitol at this time of year. Winterlude continues until the end of the Family Day weekend, so this is a great time to check out activities you haven’t tried yet. And if getting out (or being cold) isn’t your thing, snuggling down with blankets and hot chocolate sounds like a fantastic family tradition too!

And don’t forget, we can help if you need someone to watch the baby while you get out by yourself or for a special date!
